Call for Stories: What is Your Very First Football Memory? (30–50 Words)

What is Your Very First Football Memory?

There is something completely unforgettable about the very first time you experience football. Whether it was walking up concrete steps into a floodlit stadium, the smell of damp turf and Bovril, or sitting on your dad's knee watching a cup final on television, those childhood moments stay with us forever.

I am gathering these earliest football memories for an upcoming book in aid of Hertfordshire Mind (Registered Charity No. 1112487), created specifically to highlight men’s voices, local connection, and mental health awareness. Football has a unique way of bringing men together, and sharing these short, honest memories is a simple, comfortable way to start open conversations.

Call for Stories (30–50 Words)

I am calling on men of all ages to share their story.

Please submit your first or fondest football memory written in just 30 to 50 words. Focus on one vivid detail—a feeling, a sight, the sound of the crowd, or who was standing beside you on the terrace.

Example (46 words):
"Sitting on my dad’s knee for the 1973 Sunderland vs Leeds Cup Final, holding onto a black and orange football. Every time something happened, he’d whisk me into the air to my delight. It was one of the few times in life I've felt safe."

If you would like to contribute, please email your short memory directly to katiespride3@gmail.com. Selected entries will be curated into the book project, with proceeds supporting the vital work of Hertfordshire Mind.
